Dear Friend, This year has been one of depth and opening for us all at Thirdspace. In this unprecedented time with Coronavirus changing the way we all live, relate and operate, our work has become ever more relevant and meaningful. Maybe because this huge world event is pushing us all into asking very different questions of ourselves that differ from our usual, habitual ways of enquiring into life? Maybe there is some kind of awakening that’s quickening, that’s deepening? At this time of the year when we approach the deep of winter, I am finding this small passage from James Finlay particularly moving (we could also use the word Presence instead of God if we prefer in James’ writing): “God is unexplainably born in our hearts moment by moment, breath by breath. In order to discover that, we must leave the noise and business of the inn, finding our way in the dark back to the stable. We have to enter into the humility, simplicity, patience, and delicate nature of what’s unfolding in our hearts to discover how God is being born in our lives. We are asked to bring this delicate simplicity out into the world.”
When I sit and feel, when I soften and receive these words, I am reminded of the gift of this time - both this time in history and this time in the year. It’s as if we’ve been in a clearing - of diaries, of social events, of happenings, of work, of all kinds of things - and out of that clearing it’s possible that something new can be born. In order for the new to be born, we have to sincerely inhabit the dark, our hearts, our inner lives. And many times, we have to let go of the outer world in some way. Out of this dark time in winter, the spring can be born. Emptiness is the prerequisite for fullness. Space is the prerequisite for presence. If we can allow for this space, accept the opportunity that hibernation can bring and embrace the natural cycle of going inside and being still, what new beauty might be born in our thinking, our hearts and our activity in life? May these deep winter days be a space to respond to the call - the call to the enriching of our inner lives as we let go of the outer for a while. May we allow spaciousness and hibernation to have its place in the natural cycles of our year. And may we patiently wait for the seeds of the new to be born. With warmth and light,
